Stepping Our of Our Comfort Zone

There are lots of things that can feel scary as we grow older, and stepping out of our comfort zone is definitely one of them.

Why is that?

As children, we seem to have endless curiosity. We tried new things, asked questions and didn’t spend too much time worrying about whether we’d get it right. Somewhere along the way though, that confidence can start to fade.

If I’m honest, I still struggle with it myself.

Whether it’s giving a presentation to a large group for the first time or standing in front of a camera, there are plenty of moments that make me feel uncomfortable. I’m working on it though, trust me! 😊

It does make me wonder, what is it about staying in our familiar, safe space that keeps us stuck?

This week’s Nourish & Flourish session was all about trying something new.

As soon as I mentioned the menu, White Bean Puttanesca with Mediterranean Sourdough, I could see a few worried faces around the table.

“Oh, I don’t like olives.”

Even though she’d never actually tried one!

Then came:

“Oh no, not capers.”

When it comes to food, we can be very set in our ways. A new ingredient, an unfamiliar recipe or something we’ve never tasted before can sometimes put us off before we’ve even given it a chance.

“I don’t like It.”

“I don’t eat that.”

Those are phrases I hear regularly during mu sessions.

But time and time again, something wonderful happens.

People try the food anyway. And more often than not, they’re pleasantly surprised.

So far, I’m happy to say I’m still undefeated in my mission to encourage the women to try new foods and trust me with their taste buds 😄

Food has a way of connecting us to memories.

Many of us become nostalgic about the meals we grew up with, the flavours we know, family traditions and cultural favourites. And that to me is beautiful.

But sometimes those memories can keep us from discovering a newness (my term).

The truth is, there’s a whole world of ingredients, experiences, flavours and dishes waiting to be explored.

And as we’ve discovered in our sessions, eating nutritious food doesn’t have to be boring, complicated or expensive.

Sometimes it just starts with being brave enough to take the first bite.

Give it a go.

Dyonne 💛
